Meet Ciera Horton, DYW of Florida

Ciera Horton is a graduate from Circle Christian School and is currently a freshman at Wheaton College.  Ever since she was a child, Ciera has been captivated by the written word - and discovered the great joy of writing.  To date, she has written nine novel manuscripts, building her repertoire and honing impressive research skills.

In the fall of her senior year, Ciera was selected to represent the city of Orlando in the Distinguished Young Women state competition.  In January, she was chosen to become the Distinguished Young Woman of Florida 2013 and she proceeded to represent her state at the national championship in June.  At the Distinguished Young Women of America National Finals, Ciera placed in the Top 10, coming in as the second-runner up with awards in the Self-Expression and Interview categories.  Through the program, Ciera earned over $20,000 in scholarships for college.

As the Distinguished Young Woman of Florida, Ciera has spoken across the state at venues such as the Florida Parent Educators Association convention and the Books and Beyond conference.  This spring, she was the guest of Governor Rick Scott at a press rally in Ocoee.  In addition, she made appearances at community events around central Florida, promoting the 5 elements of the Be Your Best Self platform, which is the national outreach of the program.

A veteran performer, Ciera has been in many theatrical productions with Circle Theatre Company, including The Music Man, Singin' in the Rain and Peter Pan.  She also landed a leading role in the upcoming spring musical Me and My Girl.  In 2011, she was given the incredibly opportunity to blend her passion for theatre with writing and begin work on an original script.

Throughout high school, Ciera has been active in speech and debate tournaments through the NCFCA league, qualifying to the national championship twice.  In her last competitive season, she won two state championships, taking first place in Lincoln Douglas debate at the Florida and South Carolina tournaments.  In addition, Ciera has placed 1st in LD speaker points, Apologetics, Illustrated Oratory and Biographical Narrative.

As a junior in high school, Ciera was published in Teen Ink magazine with an article called Will Work for Others, a heartwarming piece about the community service project she and her family began in Windermere: The H2O ministry.  H2O stands for Hope 2 Others and the charity is devoted to helping the homeless.

Ciera currently works as a volunteer debate teacher and mentor at Legacy for Christ speech and debate.  She is also a writing coach, having written her own original writing curriculum The Write Things.
